Anatomy Basics: The amazing pelvis and how a baby gets out

First off, we are going to start with a lesson on “How the Heck does the baby get OUT?”

Ideally, babies come out head first.  If your baby is head down late in pregnancy, awesome!  Most babies will settle this way by about 36 weeks–and after that, they are not likely to flip the other way as it is a snug fit!

Head first, or “vertex” is the best/easiest way for a baby to come through the pelvis.

Our pelvis works in partnership with the baby–the hormones of pregnancy (Thank you RELAXIN!) help to loosen up those joints and the pelvis becomes flexible enough to accommodate the contours of the baby.

A head first baby is usually able to maneuver the tight passageway by accomplishing the following:
